I always approach the circus door
uneasily knowing what's inside.
There's knife-throwing going on in
there. There's elephant smell. There's
acrobat husband and big clown bride.
There's bleachers and straw and it's all
in tents. There's echoes of childish
screams,
and more. I know all of
this. It's no
surprise
