deeper yet

We'd make a great team
if we ever got started
on anything we could dig
out from the earth.
If there's anything there
to dig out - I suspect
that there is, but who
could say what it's worth?
We'd make a great hole,
at any event. Sufficient
for speeches,
and ribbon-cutting.
A pompous affair, we could stand
there and bow, maybe scrape
a bit more,
all but spent at the depths
of our undertaking, and proud
of this great, big hole
that we haven't been making.
