(never a bad) day at the beach

Clouds tower up
to heights to slouch glowering,
stalk inland on legs of lightning
and wind, feet of churning surf
- the beach is set like a breakfast
nook, time to begin. I wait
and wade, and surface
from plunge, and go

back in as the cloudburst breaks
and the streams of fresh water
fall and run
over clammy and suddenly
chilly wan flesh. I descend

to my already plastered
towel, take a swig
of my Coke can

put ball cap
and sunglasses on,
and wait for the sun. This

day

was the only one
I was able to come.
