Some tiny seed or spore
gets damp in a cool, dark
place, and up up away
we go by squiggling shaft,
plump hat: deadly or delicious?
Now we don't know that.
And be fair! It may be both.
Who's to say? The poisonous ones
might taste well sauteed
in butter and herbs and tossed
in a dish which later spells death
and loss.
But for just its time,
make a wish! It might shine
as the star of a splendid meal.
All fresh, local produce
gathered with care, thought
safe
and real.
Innocent and all.
It's hardly the mushroom's
fault we too-carefree
connoisseurs fall.
